this morning started pretty fast for me. i had to go to newport news on an emergency call. i was there for over four hours. when i returned i talked with some friends about some history on Israel.
today was election day in virginia. all day long i debated with myself on who would get my vote. i think voting is important. i take it as an obligation to my children and grandchildren. my parents taught me to vote. yes there were polls in the hills of kentucky. i was listening to wnis am790 this morning. so many people called in and said they were not going to vote because the campaign was so negative. so what. do we say we are not going to eat because the people worked too hard to harvest it? do we say we are not going to live in america because people died to keep her free? we are only seeing the beginning of negative campaigns. in jersy the ex-wife a man running for governor spoke and said if he left his family he will leave you. i admit the negative campaigns can get very aggravating. but i still want to exercise my right to vote. i'm sure thousands of people would love to live in democracy. do we take advantage of democracy? have our thoughts become civilized.
during this entire election year i was courted by voters. i mean it was more than usual. i was asked to place a sign in my yard. i was called by the NRA. several calls from the mainstream political parties. ja nonda and i was personally asked to attend a dinner with senator george allen and others here in virgnia beach. senator george allen may be our next president.
this evening jaNonda and i went to the polling place to cast our vote. as we were walking into the building. sal iaquinto (running for virginia delagate) stopped us and asked for us to vote for him. our plans were to vote for him. i shook his hand, tapped him on the shoulder and said "were voting for you buddy." He said "great." i thought that was pretty cool and i got a kick out of it. i cast my vote but janonda's got stuck in the machine. go figure. so you know i had fun with that. she walked away, smiled and said "don't do it." it was fun to share that moment with her. see if we never decided to vote then i would've never been able to share these unforgetable moments. though sal may only be our next delegate he is someone i got to meet and i'm going to allow him to make decisions on my behalf. it was even better when i returned home and we told jarred who we got to meet.
what took the night was janonda's card shutting down the machine. the pollster had to walk her through what he was doing to let her know her vote was going to count. the entire time i was saying "i told you to watch for the chads!", "you need to move to florida!" and i said "you should use the electronic one the next time." of course when we got home i told jarred. i said "out of everyone in that place if anything was going to happen it would be with your mother." we had a good laugh. you just have to know janonda. she is truly one of a kind.
congrats, sal on your election to the virginia delegate.
